Some games don’t just let you play them – they make you live them. Slender Threads is one of those rare experiences that weaves eerie atmospheres, supernatural dread, and razor-sharp dialogue into an unforgettable point-and-click adventure that lingers long after the credits roll.
As a game, Slender Threads doesn’t need to reinvent the wheel – it’s perfect in its own right. I had the pleasure of speaking with Stephen Barlow, the screenwriter behind this unsettling narrative, about the inspiration for the game, how he stumbled (or perhaps was dragged) into the world of video game writing, and the relentless passion that Blyts infuses into everything they create.

The Origins Of Slender Threads – A Tale of Horror, Wit, And… Fuzzy Socks?
So, where does one begin with a game that feels like it was crafted straight from a Tim Burton-esque literary nightmare? According to Stephen, the story’s origins are rooted in a mix of classic horror and the kind of existential musings you’d find at 3 a.m. over a cup of coffee.
Slender Threads follows Harvey Green, a man trapped in a bizarre, nightmarish loop. It’s dark, mysterious, and just the kind of story that’ll have you checking under your bed before turning in.
When I asked Stephen where the idea came from, he explained: “It was born out of a deep love for atmospheric horror and a desire to create something that feels like a puzzle for the mind—a story where the more you uncover, the less you feel like you know. We wanted to explore themes of destiny and fate and the potential for escape from them.”
The game blends classic horror vibes, dark humour, and an unnerving sense of uncertainty. “Comedy and horror share a lot of common ground,” Stephen says. “Both rely on surprise. A joke is an unexpected twist to a predictable setup and horror, likewise, plays off of the unexpected. So, we thought, why not let them feed off each other?”

A Uniquely Relatable Protagonist – Harvey Green’s Struggles
The protagonist of Slender Threads is Harvey Green, a travelling book salesman and master of the world-weary sign. At first glance, Harvey might not seem like the hero you’d typically root for. And yet, somehow, Harvey’s struggles, both existential and supernatural, strike a chord that resonates with a lot of us. But how does a character like this, who’s basically the antithesis of your average swashbuckling, sword-wielding hero, manage to be so, well, relatable?
Stephen explained, “Sure, it’s true that the majority of folks these days might not be travelling book salesmen, but I do think that there is a lot of Harvey to relate to in that, ultimately, this is a guy with a nine-to-five that is connected to his core aspiration. But he still lives in the shadow of that aspiration.”
In other words, Harvey’s not just schlepping books around for fun; he’s in a job tethered to something bigger, something he’s deeply passionate about, even if he’s not quite there yet. “He’s selling books, surrounded by the literature of people who are not him,” Stephen elaborated. “So when you think about breaking into any industry – like starting with a simple browser game when you think you want to write the next Mass Effect – it’s its own parallel.”
This relatability in Harvey’s everyday struggle makes him unexpectedly compelling. Harvey is stuck. And who hasn’t felt that way at some point in their lives? You’ve got big dreams, but you’re stuck in the mundane grind.
Stephen nails it when he says, “Everyone can relate to that feeling of being down on your luck, barely getting started in something that feels like a big, important endeavour, and wondering if you’ll ever get past step one.”

It’s the universal struggle of wanting more but feeling like you’re just one tiny cog in a massive machine. And that’s something every player can tap into.
Harvey’s story is one of perseverance. Even though he’s jaded and life has knocked him down a few times, Harvey still holds on to that little ember of ambition. “He’s relatable, but he’s not a model to live after,” Stephen adds with a chuckle. “Stay in school, kids.”
This blend of real-world frustrations and supernatural horror makes Harvey’s journey uniquely compelling. He’s not some indestructible hero, nor is he a perfect role model – he’s just a guy trying to survive his own personal apocalypse, one bad decision (and nightmare) at a time.
It’s a reminder that sometimes, just getting through the day is an achievement in itself. And even if Harvey doesn’t end up being your next life coach, there’s a weird kind of comfort in seeing someone who’s just as imperfect, just as overwhelmed, and just as human as the rest of us, trying to make sense of a world that doesn’t quite seem to care.

Ever wondered how someone gets involved in the world of video game storytelling? Stephen’s journey was anything but conventional.
“The road to this was… serendipitous, to say the least,” he laughs. “I’ve always loved games, but I never thought I’d end up writing them. Years ago, my friends and I put together a quick little browser game. It wasn’t much, but it caught the attention of some indie game podcasters. One of those hosts happened to be a consultant for Blyts, and he put me in touch with the studio.
At the time, they were working on Kelvin and the Infamous Machine, which had no dialogue at all, but if they were going for that classic point-and-click vibe, like Day of the Tentacle, they needed proper dialogue. That’s when they brought me on board.”
It’s clear that passion is embedded in Blyts’ DNA. Stephen’s eyes light up when he talks about the team: “They don’t just make games; they craft experiences. There’s so much love and attention to detail in every project. You can’t help but get swept up in the enthusiasm.”
And speaking of development… Stephen reveals that Slender Threads has been a labour love for several years. “It all began when the team took a vacation to Villa Ventana, a small town near Buenos Aires, and the name of the town in the game. The town had this Twin Peaks-esque vibe—idyllic on the surface, but you couldn’t shake the feeling that something wasn’t quite right. It inspired the eerie atmosphere you feel in the game.”
So, while the game may feel like it was birthed from a horror writer’s fever dream, it’s actually the result of years of collaboration and passion.

The Balance Of Dark Comedy And Existential Dread
While the horror and supernatural elements are central to Slender Threads, the razor-sharp dialogue makes it shine.
“It was crucial to strike the right balance,” Stephen explains. “We wanted to make you laugh while also making you feel uncomfortable. We knew we’d nailed it if we could pull off that mix.”
And they certainly did. This perfect blend of creepy and comical elevates Slender Threads from a standard point-and-click adventure to something truly unforgettable. But of course, no point-and-click game is complete without a good puzzle.
Stephen is especially proud of the way the puzzles mesh with the story. “One of the hardest things to get right is making puzzles that are both challenging and satisfying. We wanted them to feel integrated into the world. If they made you feel like you were solving a mystery rather than guessing what the developer was thinking, then we knew we’d succeeded.”
“I had my partner play it pretty early on before we had voices or anything. And I was both delighted that she was playing it, and also, like very carefully watching to see where she might have, like, slipped up. She just sort of breezed through it.”

Blyts’ Passion: More Than Just A Game
Blyts isn’t just about creating games; they’re about creating worlds that resonate with players. This ethos shines through in every dialogue, every eerie moment, and every unexpected twist in Slender Threads.
“We pour everything into our work,” Stephen says. “It’s not just about making something fun—it’s about making something that sticks with you long after the game ends.”
Stephen’s Advice for Aspiring Game Developers
So, what advice does Stephen have for aspiring game developers? “I’m a weird example,” he laughs, “but I’d say: start small. Create something manageable with a unique hook, like a simple idea you can execute well. Don’t overcomplicate things. When my friends and I made our first game, it was just three circles—but that was enough to get us noticed.”
