Alright, confession time: When I first booted up Toads of the Bayou, I wasn’t expecting much beyond incredible visuals and maybe a little froggy fun. But about five minutes in, I was sharing this demo like it was a meme that kind of reminded me of Cody that one time.

It turns out that this isometric, turn-based strategy game from La Grange Studio has layers – think tactical frog warfare with a sprinkle of voodoo and a dash of deck-building magic. And if you’re into cursed swamps and roguelike mayhem, you’re in for a treat.

In Toads of the Bayou, you’re leading a group of snappily-dressed toads on a quest to carve out a home in a swamp teeming with creepy minions from Baron Samedi’s undead army.

There’s something incredibly satisfying about upgrading and restoring a tavern so that you can grow your deck of action cards, which lets you bring chaos to the Baron’s underlings.

Like all great roguelikes, Toads of the Bayou balances risk and reward. First, you bulk up your deck with powerful cards. Then it’s into the swamp for grid-based battles that’ll have you plotting, pivoting, and maybe panicking as enemies descend.

And while this demo is just a tiny taste of what’s to come, the mix of card-based moves, character-switching, and environmental traps kept things deliciously unpredictable.

Plus, the game’s style is straight-up magic. We’re talking pixel art that could charm a crawfish, vibrant swamp backdrops, and character portraits that bring toad personality in a big way.

The card art is equally stunning, showing off every possible toad-style attack, from pistol showdowns to cutlass shenanigans – it’s eye candy at its finest.

With its unique blend of strategy and roguelike deck-building, Toads of the Bayou is shaping up to be an absolute blast.

BOTTOM LINE:

The Toads of the Bayou demo has charming pixel art, strategic grid-based combat, and a great mix of base-building and card mechanics that had me ribbet-ing with excitement.
