Sony has officially unveiled Ghost of Yōtei from Sucker Punch, a spiritual successor to Ghost of Tsushima, and it’s set to ride onto your PlayStation 5 next year. New Ghost, new era, new island – but still the same epic, samurai vibes that had us slicing through Mongols like a katana through butter.
This time around we have a female protagonist, Atsu, a wandering Ghost, swapping out the shores of Tsushima for the snowy peaks of Hokkaido’s Mount Yōtei.
The reveal trailer had a distinctly western-style flavour to it because why not mix a little cowboy with your katana? It also featured plenty of horseback riding and a moody guitar soundtrack that practically screams, “This Ghost means business.”
Oh, and Atsu isn’t entirely alone either – she’s also got a wolf companion. But in true lone warrior fashion, it looks like Atsu will still spend most of her time solo, probably because wolves aren’t the best at delivering dramatic dialogue or epic monologues.
Set in 1603, Ghost of Yōtei takes place a solid three centuries after Ghost of Tsushima and Sucker Punch has made it clear this isn’t a sequel but more of a reboot in spirit, focusing on what it truly means to be a Ghost.
“We wanted to keep the core pillars of Ghost of Tsushima: being a wandering warrior, giving players freedom to explore, and showcasing the beauty of feudal Japan,” said Andrew Goldfarb, Sucker Punch’s communications manager, on the PlayStation Blog. “But we also wanted to do something fresh. We love origin stories, so we thought: what if we explored a new legend with a new hero and a whole new region of Japan?”
And here’s where things get spicy: Ghost of Yōtei is the studio’s first game built exclusively for the PlayStation 5. No word yet on whether it’ll have PlayStation 5 Pro enhancements, but as a Sony first-party game, you can probably bet it’ll look good enough to make your console sweat a little.
As for the PC crowd, while there’s no official word, Ghost of Tsushima made waves on PC, so it wouldn’t be a shock if Atsu eventually gallops her way over there, too.
