Our Top Hardware Picks Announced at Gamescom 2024 So Far

For most of us, Gamescom is the event we watch to get caught up on all the details for upcoming games and DLCs and to find out what new games will be hitting the stores over the next year or so.

However, sometimes brands also provide updates and announcements on some of the latest hardware they’ve been working on, too, and while it might not be as crazy as what we see at events like Computex, there are still some pretty cool pieces of hardware announced at Gamescom this year that you should all keep on your radars.

Here are our top three picks announced so far:

Samsung Odyssey 3D Monitor Update:

Although these screens were announced at CES in January, Samsung opted to have them on display at Gamescom this year as well, demoing the new life simulator game InZoi. While they were only announced at CES, at Gamescom, Samsung revealed a few more details about the 3D range of Odyssey screens.

A 27-inch and 37-inch model will be available. It features a 4K display panel with a 165Hz refresh rate and a 1 ms grey-to-grey response time.

Samsung has opted to use a lenticular lens layer on the monitor, similar to what the Nintendo 3DS used in the past, and has combined it with a stereo eye-tracking camera that ensures the three-dimensional content is viewed precisely how it should be from every angle.

If you have a good memory, you’ll remember we tested a similar concept with Acers Spatial Labs technology, which absolutely blew us away.

Xbox Adaptive Joystick:

“When everybody plays, we all win.” A statement that almost brings tears to my eyes as the gaming community works harder at getting everyone involved in playing and enjoying games. At Gamescom this year, Xbox announced the Xbox Adaptive Joystick, a single-handed controller with customisable thumbsticks that allow gamers with all kinds of accessibility needs the ability to dive into games in a way that better suits them.

The Xbox Adaptive Joystick is designed to be used in conjunction with other controllers, but it can also be used on its own as it has remappable buttons. Xbox will also post different thumbstick designs on their website that you can have 3D printed.

Asus X870 and X870E Motherboards:

Asus has taken to the Gamescom show floor with their latest X870 and X870E motherboards this year.

This latest motherboard offering provides users with several auto-optimizing ‘AI’ features. These include AI Networking II, AI Overclocking and AI Cooling II. You’ll also have more granular control regarding both CPU and GPU hardware and PCIe Gen 5.0 SSDs.

The top-of-the-range model, the X870E Hero, comes with an 18+2+2 phase VRM, DDR5 support, with up to 8200Mhz speeds and 192GB RAM, 2x 40GBps USB-C display ports, an HDMI 2.1 port, WiFi 7 and dual LAN ports.

The motherboard will be compatible with AMD’s latest Ryzen 9000 series CPUs, as well as the 8000 and 700 series CPUs. It will also support up to 5 SSDs, 1 SlimSAS, and 4 SATA drives.

It also has a whopping 16 USB ports in both the rear and front support systems, varying from USB-C to USB 2.0 headers.

All-in-all, it’s a pretty powerful motherboard that’s sure to have hardware geeks frothing at the mouth.
