If you were one of the lucky few who got to experience the Sega Dreamcast in the early 2000s, you most certainly had a run at playing one of the console’s most popular games, Crazy Taxi.
Twenty-something years later, and after Sega announced in December that it would be bringing back some of its old franchises, it looks like we may experience that mad world again, as a job posting for Crazy Taxi’s development has gone live on Sega’s website.
The listing includes everything from a lead game designer with experience in car racing games and online battle games to a map designer who can adjust data and add geographical gimmicks.
All the job postings list the game as a “large-scale online title,” hinting that this Crazy Taxi reboot will be something like an MMO but with taxis.
From the posts, we are also able to determine that the game will be built in Unreal Engine 5 and that Sega is planning for it to be a AAA, not AAAA, title that will hopefully take the North American market by storm, just as the Dreamcast version did back in 2000.
If your Japanese is up to scratch, an interview was also released where some of the current development team, including Kenji Kanno, the original series producer, discussed the game. They all confirmed that the title would have multiplayer attributes while still attempting to maintain the spark and flare from the original games.
As Sega is still hunting for quite a few members to fill up the Crazy Taxi team, it’s not likely that we’ll be seeing the game release any time soon, but I am already thinking about the good old days at the I Imagine Head Office in Rivonia wasting away hours perfecting my Crazy Taxi stunts.
Oh, and uh, don’t forget your medication old-timer.
