Unshackle Yourself in this 25-Years Later Sequel to Outcast

Outcast, an action-adventure game that may have been one of the first to embrace the open-world style that so many games use today, has finally released an official sequel, even though they dropped the ” from the name.

The original game was released in 1999. That’s so long ago they thought we’d be in touch with alien planets in the year 2007. Now, 25 years later, Cutter Slade must return to the planet of Adelpha to free the enslaved Talan people.

Outcast: A New Beginning features the same non-linear, open-world gameplay that the original felt. This time, the creators have drawn inspiration not only from the original Outcast but also from a plethora of games that the original may have inspired in its own way.

Games like The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, where areas are not locked behind any sort of level or experience gates, are where the team drew ideas from.

“After a tutorial sequence, the player is completely free to explore every inch of that world without any segmentation or restrictions,” says Andreas Schmiedecker, producer at THQ Nordic. Schmiedecker also boasts about the 64 square kilometre open world map, with seven large Talan villages and a multitude of biomes for players to explore and engage with.

“We try to keep the same feeling of liberty but give the player different tools to exploit it.” says game director Pablo Coma when discussing how players will experience the game’s large, open world.

Outcast: A New Beginning was just released on Friday last week for those of you who want to explore the wilds in complete and utter freedom.

You can grab it on Steam, Xbox, or PlayStation right now.
