In a world where humans could not survive toxic waste and droughts, how do you think a colony of beavers will fair? The only way to find out is to play the city-building game Timberborn, which features a heck of a lot of wood and unique water-based mechanics because, you know, beavers.
The game was released into Early Access in 2021, sold over 1 million copies, and amassed an “Overwhelmingly Positive” review score on Steam, with 20,000 reviews. Almost three years later, the team behind the game, Mechanistry, have kept up with tweaks, features and updates, proving that the game is not just one of those hit-it-and-quit-it type situations.
While we were all hibernating over the weekend, the fifth major update to the game was announced, featuring an all-new menace to beaver society: Badwater.
The name Badwater is pretty self-explanatory, but in case you don’t know the fundamentals of life, when you’re using water to grow crops and keep yourself hydrated, if the water source is bad, that’s pretty bad for every living thing.
Adding to the standard seasons of winter, summer and the season of drought, Badwater brings a new season to be mindful of: Badtides. This new dreaded season starts with torrents of toxic water infecting your normal water supplies, affecting your crops, beavers, and buildings if they are not effectively managed.
Not all is bad when it comes to Badwater, though. New buildings have also been added with the latest update, allowing you to extract the toxic waste from the water to form “Extract”. Extract is a new resource that can be used to speed up beaver production, cure toxic poisoning from the Badwater or even boost your dynamite for bigger and better terraforming.
While all this Badwater talk seems like a big enough update to the game on its own, there is a lot more that has been added with Update 5, including new attractions and decorations, a few building updates, a complete rework on the irrigation system and updates to the in-game maps to include all this new toxic water.
