Invisible Sun is a table-top RPG that comes in an all-black cube, holding wonders, mystery and magic inside. When it was initially released back in 2018, the game almost immediately sold out. CEO of Monte Cook Games, the designers behind Invisible Sun, Charles Ryan, said that even employees had to give up their personal copies to fulfil the orders.
“When I say we sold out, I mean we sold out… There are no black cubes at MCG, nothing in the warehouses, it was not available.” says Ryan, who was thrilled to hear that a new crowdfunding campaign for a re-print was fully funded within hours of it kicking off.

For those of you who missed out the first time, this may be the opportunity you’ve been waiting for. The standalone game with everything you need to start sits at $252, or about R4,800. You can pick up the game with its six expansions for $481, or almost R9,000.
While that does put the game on the expensive side of things, with the campaign already reaching its fully funded goal, it’s obvious that there are huge fans of the game and of what Monte Cook Games develops.

Invisible Sun will set players on a journey as Vislae, newly awakened sorcerers honing their magical powers. Featuring the in-depth Cypher System developed by MCG, your character will need to face both joy and despair to grow and move forward and ask “why” to the world around you.
The game also features “side-scenes”, which involve narratives that are taken off the actual gameplay board, discussed by the players and then presented to the GM, who can then resolve the scene using a card from the Sooth Deck, a tarot-like deck that mechanically moves the game forward turn-by-turn or scene-by-scene.
The game itself does seem immensely intimidating, but with this latest re-print, MCG hopes to add in what they are calling The Wellspring. An area that players can start the game in to help develop their characters before they set off on their actual journey.
Of course, being a game set in a narrative world, Invisible Sun also allows players to join at any time of the ongoing story as they can be written into the narrative from that point onwards. This gives new players the opportunity to join in with more experienced players for an easier entry point into the surreal plane of Invisible Sun.

If any of this tickles your magical fancy, you can jump onto the Backerkit and back the game here. There is also a free, downloadable preview of the game for you to try out, which you can grab here.
