There are few things worse than having a handheld device that runs out of space, and there’s nothing you can do but delete a few games to make space for the latest update on another.
Steam Deck and ROG Ally consumers might be excited to hear that Western Digital is now selling M.2 SSDs that can fit inside your device. The form factor known as M.2 2230 has traditionally been quite hard to find unless you knew someone taking apart their Microsoft Surface. However, since the rapid uptick in handheld devices, companies are making the SSDs more readily available.
A few other notable companies like Corsair, Sabrant and Micron have also released SSDs in this form factor to the general public.
Western Digital has released a 500GB, 1TB and 2TB model. The 1TB and 2TB both support PCIe Gen 4.0, which can deliver speeds up to 5,150 MB/s.

As of writing this, the 500GB model and 1TB model are available on the Western Digital online store for $74.99 (around R1,420) and $109.99 (around R2,100), respectively. It’s said that the 2TB model is a Best Buy Exclusive, priced at $239.99 (around R4,500).
We’ve reached out to some local partners to find out if these drives will be available on South African shores and will be sure to update this piece once we hear any more information.
