League Of Legends Ditching Mythic Items – At Long, Long Last

Never say that Riot Games doesn’t listen to their community. After three long years of players moaning, begging and pleading for Riot to remove Mythic items that haven’t gone over well with the community since debuting, they will finally leave sometime in January 2024.

For those of you who have yet to lose years of your life to the popular MMO, Mythic items were first introduced in 2021. They were promised to be powerful cornerstones of player builds, with significant effects to define playstyle from game to game.

Players can only hold a single Mythic item per game. Still, ever since their launch, the community has been vocal about how Mythics do nothing but constrain builds and playstyles – instead of improving them like promised.

Now, Riot has done something many had previously thought impossible, and they acknowledged that Mythics never managed to hit the mark with a statement saying:

“We aren’t happy with the current state of Mythic items; we were wrong about some of our initial goals, and our philosophies around items have evolved as a result.

Trying to serve the needs of a bunch of different champions in a class with a few Mythic items has proven to be really challenging. And while it works pretty well for about half the roster, the other half is left with items that don’t feel really right for them, or have their creativity stifled.”

While half the roster might not sound like a big deal, League of Legends has over 160 characters, so it’s significant. Riot also stated that while Mythics will be cut, a few of the Mythic items that players seem to enjoy will be kept in the game and adjusted to exist as regular items instead of prescriptive centrepieces.

The community response to this news has been overwhelmingly positive, with many taking to social media to express their joy at finally being heard.
