Magic the Gathering has been making some waves in the news lately, what with its one-of-a-kind $2 million dollar One Ring card that was just sold to Post Malone, and they’re riding this hype train as far as they can by pumping more coal into the engine.
Universes Beyond is a subset of MtG that still plays by the same rules as Magic usually does but utilising characters and worlds from other IPs out there. Think of it like adding Spider-man to Fortnite.
Well, over the weekend Wizards of the Coast announced three, pretty sick, new IPs they’ll be partnering with for a few new sets of Magic the Gathering Universes Beyond.
Starting with the earliest set to launch, WotC has partnered with Fallout, which will be released around March 2024. It is said that the commander sets will be based on the different in-game factions such as The Brotherhood of Steel or The New California Republic, although the commander decks have not yet been confirmed.
Following that, we should also see an Assassins Creed-themed set, around Q3 in 2024. With around 4 or 5 planned commander decks it’s likely that these AC decks will be focused around the main characters from each of the games, like Ezio or Altair.
The third significant collaboration, which is set for a 2025 launch, is the one between WotC and Final Fantasy. The plan is to feature cards from every Final Fantasy game, starting way back in 1987 when Final Fantasy was released, all the way up to its latest iteration FFXVI. Not much else has been said with regard to the Final Fantasy decks, but we still have a good while before 2025, so there is time for them to get all their Chocobos in a row. This news has made me download Magic the Gathering Arena, just to see if I still remember how to play this game after 20 or so years. Does it inspire you to do the same?
