Bungie’s New IP Has A Release Window

It might seem like Bungie already has its hands full between Destiny 2 and the upcoming reboot of Marathon. Still, Bungie has been juggling even more balls, or games if you will, with the studios third new IP being far closer to launch than previously anticipated.

To recap: back in 2018, Bungie filed a trademark for a new game known only as Matter, and since then, Bungie has been remarkably tightlipped about the project leading many to believe it was still a far way off.

Now thanks to the ongoing legal drama of Microsoft and its attempt to acquire Activision Blizzard, we finally know more about Matter. New documents from Microsoft’s latest FTC hearings suggest Matter could be released sometime in 2025.

The document in question contains an evaluation of Bungie done by Microsoft in 2021. It outlines the studio’s plans for expansion and game support. The document indicates that the studio has doubled the size of its operation and opened its first international office, which would focus on the development of Matter.

The evaluation of Bungie by Microsoft lines up with other reports stating that Microsoft was initially eyeing Bungie and Sega before trying to acquire Activision Blizzard instead.

Since the 2021 evaluation, Sony bought Bungie for a staggering $3.6 billion, so it stands to be seen if Matter is still on track for the 2025 release window or if the Sony acquisition expedited things.
