Some game companies and developers will have you believe that releasing broken games is a certainty, looking at you, Lord of the Rings: Gollum, but then another game releases and is so good it shatters records across the board, something The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom continues to do.
The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom is the latest entry into Nintendo’s long-running series, and since its launch, it’s fast become the highest-ratest game of 2023 – a title it more than deserves.
Continuing the story of Breath of the Wild, The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom offers enough new and exciting content to keep players engaged beyond the constraints of just the main story and quests. Since the game was released, social media has been inundated with pictures and videos of players showing off all the fantastic things they’ve built in the game.
This constant level of positive online conversation has no doubt played a role in the reason why we are here right now, and that’s to acknowledge that The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom sold over 10 million units in only three days, making it the Guinness World Record holder for the fastest-selling Nintendo game to date.
The previous Nintendo title to hold this award was 2018’s Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, which sold 12 million units in 24 days. If we look back to before the Nintendo Switch, the fastest-selling Nintendo release was 2009’s New Super Mario Bros. Wii, which sold 10 million copies in eight weeks.
Just looking at that comparison shows how remarkable this achievement truly is for Nintendo and how hungry gamers are for a game that’s just good and doesn’t need a series of apology Tweets or patches to get it to a playable state after launch.
