Bungie Fans Crack Marathon ARG Puzzle

If you’ve read my previous article on the PlayStation showcase, you’d know I’ve picked Marathon as one of my latest obsessions. Although not much was given away in the teaser trailer, it still managed to get me all excited.

Waking up this morning, I found out that there was a lot more to the trailer than what was first implied.

In what I can only describe as “literally the coolest thing ever”, a few Bungie fans noticed a little something-something hidden in the Marathon teaser, that led them down the ultimate puzzle rabbit hole. They managed to crack the puzzle, and the treasure at the end was a Video Documentary (ViDoc) from the developers of Marathon, giving us a whole lot of information on the game.

The ViDoc goes on to explain that Marathon will be a PvP-focused extraction shooter, where the narrative is created by the players themselves. You’ll be hunting for weapons, artefacts and keys that will assist in making you and your team the best runners out there.

Christopher Barret describes a situation where one team manages to find an “alien key”, and by using this key and solving the puzzle behind it, they “immortalise” themselves by becoming the first team to unlock the next sector for the rest of the players to work through.

A lot of the chatter around the game sounds like a futuristic, almost gameshow, type vibe where every player’s goal is to become the most renowned runner out there, and while I sit here in my chair, jiggling the slipper on my foot, I feel like that could be me.

While the ViDoc is just that extra bit of awesome I was hoping to get from the showcase, what’s even cooler is how the guys managed to crack the code to get the ViDoc out into the world. In the video below Skarrow9, a Destiny Streamer, talks about how they solved it and it’s just crazy to watch how they had to pull information from so many different places to get it.

Who knows, with all this “immortalising” talk going on around Marathon, perhaps Skarrow9 and the rest of the team that solved it will get their own, sweet, in-game skins.
