Lord of the Rings MMO, 3?

Lord of the Rings Online, you know it exists, right? I mean, it’s 16 years old and already on version 35 and a bit. Well, either Amazon doesn’t know that it exists or they played it once and thought it was Lego-lame because, for the second time since 2019, they’re attempting to create their own Lord of the Rings MMO.

The game is said to be “in the early stages of production” from the same studio that brought us New World, Amazon Games Orange County. They’ve been given the go-ahead by Embracer Group, the IP holders for LotR and The Hobbit, to create a game that follows the stories of these books. It sounds like we’ll be playing a game during the actual time of these stories. As for how exactly that will work, well, your guess is as good as mine, but if I could attend the original dinner party at Mr. Baggins’ house, you’d better believe I’m going to be there.

In the press release, Christoph Hartmann, vice president of Amazon Games said: “Bringing players a fresh take on The Lord of the Rings has long been an aspiration for our team, and we’re honoured and grateful that Middle-earth Enterprises is entrusting us with this iconic world.” I sure hope that this “fresh take” is as exciting as it was to experience the Lord of the Rings movies themselves, but with how popular New World is, I’m sure that the team can bring us something amazing.

Are you excited to see another Lord of the Rings MMO enter the fold, or are you still playing your lute, as happy as a hobbit in the current Lord of the Rings Online?
