Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth Could Break the Universe

When it releases later this year, Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth is set to continue the story of Cloud Strife from immediately after the events of Final Fantasy 7 Remake left off. For those who don’t know, Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth is set to be the second part of a planned trilogy. Based on the events and changes in Remake, there is a strong, if not definite, chance Rebirth will completely deviate from the original game.

So far, Final Fantasy 7 Remake has been a massive success for Square Enix. Instead of the game being a stock standard re-release with some upgraded graphics, the game was rebuilt from the ground up and managed to stay mostly faithful to the source material while also introducing some significant changes to keep the game interesting for both new and returning players.

Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth will build upon this success. Thanks to the new timeline introduced, it could pave the way to some exciting crossovers between other Final Fantasy games. One of the most significant changes came with the introduction of Whispers, harbingers of fate whose job is to ensure things play out the way they are supposed to.

These Whispers started to emerge at crucial points of Remake’s story. During the game, Cloud defeats these Whispers, essentially putting into play a system where nothing stops the saga’s key events from changing or even disappearing altogether in the future.

The consequences of this change depend on how creative the game writers get in Rebirth and could open the story to changes that have never been possible before in Final Fantasy’s history. Thanks to Square Enix going to such extremes to establish the new rules in this timeline and the pivotal role of the Whispers, it doesn’t seem far-fetched for fans to expect the story they know and love to continue but with some significant curveballs thrown in and fans might even see some crossover between Final Fantasy 7 and some of the other beloved characters from the franchise.

Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth is set to release for PlayStation 5 later this year, and we can’t wait to see what the story has in store.
