On Monday morning, I covered a new hero that would make its big Overwatch 2 debut, Lifeweaver. At the time, Overwatch had yet to reveal any information about the hero other than his splash art and name. However, that all changed yesterday when Overwatch 2 decided to drop a full animated trailer explaining the character’s Origin Story and further highlighting the hero’s Thai background.
At the moment, Lifeweaver is headlining Overwatch 2’s upcoming Season 4 as the ninth support hero to join the popular first-person hero shooter roster. Since Overwatch 2 launched last year, support players have felt that the support role was an afterthought and that there was a lack of heroes to choose from. Although many new champions have entered the roster, they’ve yet to do much to quell this shortfall.
Overwatch 2 boasts eleven tank heroes, seventeen DPS heroes and only eight support heroes, with Lifeweaver being the first of two new heroes planned for 2023 to address complaints.
Thanks to the animated video, we now know that Lifeweaver is a naturalist and used to form part of the Vishkar Academy, the same Vishkar Academy that Symmetra became a part of as a child. During this time, Lifeweaver fused the corporation’s hard light technology with living plants to invent bio-light, a technology capable of healing people and ultimately making the world better.
As anyone who has ever read a book or watched a movie can predict, The Vishkar Corporation wished to claim bio-light as their creation and use it for their purposes which in turn caused Lifeweaver to denounce Vishkar and its formulaic focus on uniformity and leave the academy, setting out on his own to heal the world with his bio-light.
Lifeweavver is the first Thai character to join Overwatch 2, and it’s great to see Blizzard continue to highlight diverse characters and bring new cultures to the game. Lifeweaver will be available for Season 4 of Overwatch 2, which will arrive on the 11th of April.
Overwatch 2 is available now on PC, PS4, PS5, Switch, Xbox One and Xbox Series X/S.
