Friday was a sad day. Lance Reddick, the iconic actor who is no stranger to the video game world, having lent his voice to games from the Horizon series to Quantum Break and Destiny, has passed away.
The beloved actor was only 60 years old and while he’s been in a wide variety of successful films and TV shows from John Wick to The Wire, he is perhaps best recognised among gamers as the commander of The Last City, the Awoken Guardian Zavala.
Lance Reddick was a core part of Destiny and over the weekend, players have been flocking to his in-game character to honour him as a display of respect and solidarity. For those who don’t play Destiny, Zavala is one of the first characters players meet in the original game and in the years since the character has evolved into one of the franchise’s deepest and favourite characters.

So when the sad news of Lance Reddick’s passing reached the internet on Friday, many players from around the world logged into the game and headed straight for the Tower to pay tribute to Lance by giving each other emote hugs and surrounding themselves with neon-coloured tower candles.
While it’s never easy when a beloved figure passes away, his presence is felt throughout Destiny and thanks to the community his character is sure to live on forever in the hearts of players and the mythos of the game.
