If you’ve read any of our coverage leading up to the official release of Hogwarts Legacy, you already know we strongly recommend not to start running before you can crawl. Hogwarts isn’t open to being explored before you’ve proven yourself ready. Up until players have access to a broom and Talents exploring is more frustrating than it’s worth.
Having read that, you’d be forgiven if you thought you couldn’t get any eye monster chests scattered throughout the world to open because you don’t have the required skills yet, and you’d only be somewhat right.
The eye monster chests dotted throughout Hogwarts Legacy are called Disillusionment chests. If you don’t want even the hint of a spoiler, stop reading here, and attempt to open the chests again, knowing what you do now.

For those of you still here, Disillusionment chests are a kind of sentient stink-eyed treasure receptacle that are more scared of you than you are of them. If they see you with their giant, cyclopean eye, they are guaranteed to become frightened and lock themselves up. Preventing treasure-hungry wizards and witches from revealing what lies within.
Now, to unlock the Monster Eye Chests found throughout Hogwarts Legacy, all you need is the Disillusionment spell (a spell that becomes available early on in the game). Players must then cast the Disillusionment spell quietly before approaching the chest.
The overarching idea here is to approach the chest undetected and loot its contents before it knows what’s happened. So your best bet is to cast Disillusionment from a reasonable distance away and slowly and quietly sneak up on it. When you’re close enough, press the corresponding prompt that will allow you to loot the chest.
Disillusionment or Monster Eye chests contain roughly 500 Galleons on average, making them well worth the effort of looting.
