GoldenEye 007 returns to Xbox and Nintendo

Seeing Pierce Brosnan brings back many childhood memories of watching James Bond movies – and of course, the epic games that came with them- in the late 90s and early 2000s.

GoldenEye was released on the Nintendo 64 in 1997, four years after the previous Bond game, and was the critically acclaimed adaptation of the Pierce Brosnan film by the same name. However, the highly praised multiplayer mode, a last-minute addition to the game, solidified its status as one of the greatest games of the decade.

Today, the game is being made available again in a simultaneous release on Xbox and Nintendo Switch. However, they are two separate versions with significant differences.

Nintendo started to add N64 games to its Nintendo Switch Online service in 2021, with the Nintendo 64 version of GoldenEye being the latest addition to the service. To get it, you’ll do however have to subscribe to the Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack, which will set you back R629 on a 12-month subscription, unfortunately, there is no monthly subscription option with the Expansion Pack.

While on Xbox, a remastered version of GoldenEye 007 is now available on Game Pass. The remastered version features 4K resolution, smoother frame rates, and split-screen local multiplayer.

A significant difference between the two versions is that the online multiplayer mode, which made the game so famous in the first place, will only be available on the Nintendo Switch.

Speaking of Bond games, my favourite was Agent Under Fire, which was released for the PlayStation 2 in 2001. As a car lover, the BMW Z8, with all its Bond gadgets, stole my heart. Which Bond games are your favourite? Let us know in the comments below.
