What were you doing today 16 years ago? I can remember what I was doing clear as day. Sixteen years ago, Gears of War was released, and I was at a friend’s house, Xbox 360 consoles linked up, ready to spend the day playing. A lot has happened since the game first hit shelves, but amazingly, the franchise has kept people playing and invested with each game since.
Now, humanity’s last stand has reached a new frontier with the announcement that the much loved and iconic video game franchise will soon get an entirely new audience to fall in love thanks to a live-action film adaptation and an adult animated television series in the works over at Netflix.

Last night, Netflix confirmed this partnership with a Tweet reading, “Gears of War was released 16 years ago today and to mark the occasion, Netflix has partnered with The Coalition to adapt the @GearsofWar video game saga into a live-action feature film, followed by an adult animated series — with the potential for more stories to follow!”
So far, we know that The upcoming film and series will be produced in partnership with The Coalition, the developer behind the Gears of War games and that the Gears adaption will join a veritable plethora of video game adaptions over at Netflix from Assassin’s Creed, Sonic Prime, BioShock and more.
As of now, it’s not entirely clear if this project is connected to the Gears of War movie that has been stuck in development hell for the last 15 years, but it’s doubtful. We will probably see something completely new from Netflix.
