There are few games as instantly recognisable as 2012’s cult classic, Lollipop Chainsaw. With a script written by Guardians of the Galaxy’s James Gunn, Lollipop Chainsaw was a brutally funny game about a cheerleader battling zombies with a chainsaw and her dead (yet still animate) boyfriend’s head dangling from her hip. And now it’s getting a remake.
During the game’s 10th anniversary last month, the internet lost its mind when a simple Tweet “Lollipop Chainsaw is back” from Yoshimi Yasuda, the game’s producer, teased a continuation of the game. Now, however, we have actual confirmation about the future of the beloved classic.
Last night Yoshimi Yasuda shared on Twitter that he had repurchased the rights to Lollipop Chainsaw from the publisher, Kadokawa Games. He also revealed that he had gathered up the game’s original development team, who are currently working with him on the upcoming remake. Yoshimi explained on Twitter:
“Unfortunately, various factors resulted in things making it so that fans can no longer easily play Lollipop Chainsaw, and it has been some time since players have not been able to access the game on current consoles; as such, we purchased the Lollipop Chainsaw intellectual property from Kadokawa Games, and decided to develop a remake. We have already contacted Warner Bros. about development and are being supported by them in this endeavour.”

While the game won’t be the sequel many were expecting last month, some changes will have to happen. For example, most of the licensed soundtrack will have to be replaced. They are also using this opportunity to replace the game’s iconic, almost cel-shaded look with more realistic graphics.
While an official release date for the remake hasn’t been set yet, Yoshimi has said that gamers can expect to dive back into the trashy-but-in-a-good-way game sometime next year.
