Dying Light Enhanced Edition
Get it on Steam
Picked by Regardt
One of the best open-world Zombie games I’ve ever played is Dying Light and even though the Dying Light 2 is around the corner, the first game is still as great as ever. Especially considering you can get the first game and some or all of the expansions for a steal in the Autum Sale. From scaling buildings with fancy parkour to looting and crafting weapons, this game will have you on the edge of your seat while you try and outrun the hordes of undead. Its a fantastic game and one that should be in your collection.
Psychonauts 2
Get it on Steam
Picked by Arielle
One of the things that made Psychonauts 2 feel truly special is how lovingly Double Fine built on the first game instead of just throwing it out and starting afresh all these years later. Playing Psychonauts 2 feels new and fresh while also still loyal to the game beloved by many, for better or worse. It’s hard to talk about Psychonauts 2 because, at the end of the day, it’s a game that shouldn’t be read about or watched, it should be played.
If you’re still on the fence about it at the end of all of this word vomit, there is a character voiced by Jack Black, and it’s every bit as hilarious as you’d imagine and while there is undoubtedly a lot to be said for the allure of nostalgia, what it ultimately comes down to is that Psychonauts 2 is just a great game – regardless of if you’re a returning player or discovering the series for the very first time.
Farcry 3
Get it on Steam
Picked by Len
It all starts with a fun skydive with a group of your mates over a remote island, far from civilisation, what could possibly go wrong? “You see mate, we’re not the savages, we, are the shepherds”, said an Australian once upon a time. Farcry 3, for me, ticks all the right boxes of a FPS game, raw fun, open world, great storyline, sneaky kills, and OMG, I just pooped my pants. Obisoft released this game in 2012 and if it is not part of your game collection, WTF, get it now for only fifty bucks mate, FIFTY smackers. That’s less than a lager at the local hang!
Cyberpunk 2077
Get it on Steam
Picked by Luke
Cyberpunk 2077 is on sale right now, and in my own opinion, contrary to the majority, I loved the game in its entirety and played it multiple times, through and through, and even loved it in terms of soundtracks, characters and plot. If you didn’t have much faith in it in the beginning or if you don’t wanna spend a lot of money on the game, then get it now. It’s definitely worth it in my opinion, and I can’t wait for the next-gen version to drop and have me crying like the day I finished the game.
Dreamscaper
Get it on Steam
Picked by Arielle
If I ever lose my memory, I want someone to let me play Dreamscaper so that I can experience it again, for the first time.
Dreamscaper is one of the most relaxingly beautiful yet brutal experiences I’ve had in a game in a good while. The art, character design, dialogue and music all mesh so well with the roguelike gameplay. They say that “Music Hath Charms to Soothe the Savage Beast” and Dreamscaper proves that to be true. No matter how many times I had to restart a run or how hard (read impossible) I found a boss fight, I was always somehow calm and relaxed. And coming from someone who consists of 90% stress, that’s saying a lot.
These days it takes a lot for me to sacrifice my sleep to play a single-player game willingly. Not that I think multiplayer games are better in any way, but with multiplayer games come friends and with friends comes peer pressure, my one true weakness. So when I tell you that I woke up at the crack of dawn on a Saturday, my sleep-in day, and all I wanted to do was race out of bed, not even pausing to grab a coffee, and jump back into Dreamscaper, you know it’s something special.
Doom Eternal
Get it on Steam
Picked by Len
John Carmack was the first geek crush I experienced around the time we started New Age Gaming Magazine in 1997, yes, that was a long time ago. The first game engine called Doom was an epic claim to fame for the man, besides games such as Quake, Alien versus Predator and Doom. As a matter of interest, my son Luke, was a couple of months old when he first “experienced” a beta version of Doom 3 we received at the NAG office in 2001… I got the parent of the year award when my missus walked into my office with my son on my lap, bright-eyed, staring lovingly at the cute monsters on screen and, as far as I can tell, he has no side effects and is fairly normal. Doom Eternal, released in 2020, is an epic game that you must have if you are an FPS fanboy, and if you want to be a great parent like me. Let your newborn play it now damnit! It’s on sale for just R219.75
Death’s Door
Get it on Steam
Picked by Arielle
A breath of fresh air in an often stale genre
Death’s Door hits all the right notes for an indie game. It’s a visual masterpiece with characters and environments that feel polished and alive. The score is atmospheric without ever feeling monotonous. The combat is challenging but rewarding, and the gameplay is easy to pick up and well-balanced. As someone who generally doesn’t enjoy the whole Soulslike style of game, I found myself utterly enthralled with Death’s Door partly due to its intriguing story, its puzzle-filled world and not losing my progress each time I died, which happened a lot.
Death’s Door is one of the more satisfying gaming experiences I’ve had in a game as of late. The lack of any difficulty settings means that Death’s Door always feels challenging but never impossible. Every time I failed, I knew it was because I messed up, not because the game was just too hard or that mechanics were broken. When I finished Death’s Door, I walked away craving more and with a feeling of accomplishment, which speaks volumes about how great the game truly is.
Subnautica
Get it on Steam
Picked by Regardt
One of the most impressive underwater games you’ll ever play, Subnaitica is another game that everyone should own and play at least once. You crash-land on another planet, covered entirely with water. Your objective is to explore and survive this alien world by finding food and equipment to craft items and build underwater habitats. This game is simply gorgeous and loads of fun to play and if you did not manage to snag this title already, you can grab the base game for under R100, or grab one of the bundles for an equally great deal.
Horizon Zero Dawn
Get it on Steam
Picked by Luke
I played it many times on Playstation and I cannot believe this amazing game made it to PC. It’s beautiful, in terms of visual eye-candy, and the music is amazing and the entire world is stunning to experience. The story left me in tears throughout its entirety. Aloy brings the power and brains, all you have to do is bring the money.
