Even more games now feature bonus extra FPS on Xbox Series X/S consoles

Microsoft has announced that FPS Boost mode is now available on 74 more backwards-compatible games, increasing the total number of games supported to 97.

Introduced with the Xbox Series X/S consoles, FPS Boost can bump frame rates in previous-gen games from the original limit of 30 to 60 or even 120. Since launching on Xbox Game Pass last month, for example, five Bethesda games – Prey, Skyrim, Dishonored, Fallout 4, and Fallout 76 – have been updated to enable FPS Boost.

“Higher, steadier framerates make games visually smoother, resulting in more immersive gameplay,” Xbox Wire editor Will Tuttle explained at the time. “We partnered closely with developers to enhance the experience while maintaining the game’s original intent. And while not applicable to all games, these new techniques can push game engines to render more quickly for a buttery smooth experience beyond what the original game might have delivered due to the capabilities of the hardware at the time.”

Games joining the FPS Boost club this week, according to Major Nelson, include Assassin’s Creed Unity, Deus Ex Mankind Divided, Far Cry 5, Metro: Last Light Redux, and – oooooh! – My Time at Meth Camp Portia. FPS Boost is automatically enabled for most games on the list, except in some special cases where the resolution is reduced to compensate for this.

You can confirm whether or not a game has FPS Boost enabled by doing one of two things:

  • From the Xbox Guide menu, find the game, go to “Manage games and add-ons” and select “Compatibility options”.
  • With the Xbox Guide menu up, there’s an “FPS Boost” label at the top-right of the screen. EZPZ.
