Asking me “how much storage space do you actually need for your PC” is like asking a four-year old kid “how much sugar do you actually need in your tummy”. I need more storage space. That’s it. Forever. MORE STORAGE SPACE.
The team at Syntech sent me this Crucial X6 1TB SSD for review, just in time for its local launch this week. More storage space? Yes, please. Portable storage space? Super convenient. The most teeny-tiniest portable storage space ever? I think I’m in love. Until I forget it’s in my pocket, I mean, and it accidentally ends up in the laundry and breaks my heart and I have to replace it with a new one.
My X6 review unit is the 1TB model (500GB, 2TB, and 4TB models are also available), and the box includes a USB 3.2 Type-C cable, with support for transfer speeds up to 10GB/s. A branded USB Type-C to USB Type-A adaptor is sold separately for compatibility with older devices like the PS4 and Xbox One which don’t have USB Type-C ports, but I assume a generic adaptor would work with it too.
The X6’s plastic case is officially rated for drops up to about one metre and unofficially, probably even higher than that, but I’m not the guy who’s going to find out just how much. Its design is minimalist almost to a fault – I kind of wish the X6 featured some activity LEDs, maybe some RGB, but nope. Skipping on the gamercore aesthetics isn’t a real problem, but the total absence of status indicators feels like a mistake.
In terms of performance, the X6 got close to the advertised 540MB per second read speed on my Windows 10 PC, and in CrystalDiskMark sequential simulations, clocked 520.75MB per second read, 345.40MB per second write, and 435.41MB per second mix. A 10GB file transfer takes about 30 seconds. It isn’t the fastest mini SSD on the market, but for R3,100? It’s fast enough.
