You can import your original game save into Diablo 2: Resurrected

And I was about to celebrate until I remembered that my original game save was 20 years, five or six different PCs, and a lot of, uh, character file “improvisation” ago, so I can’t. Not even for-reals necromancy can save you now, Mr Bones. I’m sorry.

For those of you who are more responsible than me, though, Blizzard has confirmed that Diablo 2: Resurrected supports original game save imports. Talking to IGN Middle East, project producer Matthew Cederquist explains that this was almost by accident.

Back when we were working on [the remaster], we wondered if the old save files would work and we kind of shoved it in and it worked! And we were like, ‘okay, that’s the best feature ever’.

But not actually by accident, because Diablo 2: Resurrected isn’t a remake – it’s the same game with a new paint job, and even features a visual control to swap between the 2000 and 2021 versions. “We’re not reverse-engineering it; we’re not rebuilding it and trying to make it look and sound like [Diablo 2],” franchise producer Rod Fergusson tells Polygon. “This is [Diablo 2].”

Does… does that mean what I think it means?

Diablo 2: Resurrected is out this year on PC and consoles, but Blizzard hasn’t announced a date yet. In the meantime, though, sign up for the alpha test and don’t get scammed.
