Now with added Hugh Grant.
Hasbro is taking another crack at bringing their iconic tabletop RPG to life with a new Dungeons & Dragons film adaptation. The classic nerd game has recently seen a resurgence in popularity thanks to Stranger Things and celebrity fans like Joe “The Best Werewolf” Manganiello, so they’re culturally obligated to make a new movie, even though 2000’s Dungeons & Dragons is something we’d rather not think about.
It’s okay, because this new Dungeons & Dragons, according to Deadline, will “take a subversive approach to the game”. So maybe something like the new Jumanji films or perhaps something so laden with irony that you can’t tell if you, as a fan, are being made fun of or not? And that’s really all we know about the potential plot.
Dungeons & Dragons is being written and directed by Jonathan Goldstein and John Francis Daley, who both previously worked on Game Night and Spider-Man: Homecoming. The surprisingly excellent cast, so far, includes Regé-Jean Page (Bridgerton), Chris Pine (Wonder Woman), Michelle Rodriguez (almost all the Fast and Furious films), Sophia Lillis (IT), Justice Smith (Pokémon Detective Pikachu), and Hugh Grant as the mystery villain.
But that’s not all, there’s also a TV series in development with Derek Kolstad (John Wick) as writer.
Dungeons & Dragons is due to release some time in 2022.
