Bloober Team’s psychological creep-’em-up launched PC and Xbox on Thursday, and by Friday had already banked enough cash to make a profit for the Polish studio.
Talking to local financial news website Money.pl on 29 January, a studio rep confirmed that “sales of [The Medium] have reached a level that covered the costs of production and marketing of the game”.
Besides Steam and the Epic Games Store on PC, The Medium is available to subscribers on Xbox Game Pass, and Bloober Team hasn’t disclosed how much that deal contributed to the game’s almost instant success. Unconventionally, the console version of the game is exclusive to Xbox Series S and X models, and one of a limited number of games that launched with support for next-gen razzle-dazzle features like ray-tracing on Xbox Series X.
I’m about three hours in now, and it’s an intriguing game reminiscent of old skool adventure games like The Longest Journey, but with more dead kids and Soviet existential dread.
