Deadpool 3 confirmed for the MCU

Marvel Studios boss Kevin Feige has announced that a third Deadpool movie is in the works, this time as an actual, for reals Marvel Cinematic Universe project but probably not featuring more than two or three X-Men because that’s, like, an important joke.

The first two movies were produced by 20th Century Fox, and the company’s acquisition by Disney in 2018 prompted inevitable questions about the franchise’s future with its new family-friendly parental unit. According to Feige, however, that’s not a worry – but before you get too hyped, Deadpool star and writer Ryan Reynolds hasn’t finished the script, and the sequel won’t even start filming until 2022.

“It will be rated R and we are working on a script right now, and Ryan’s overseeing a script right now,” he tells Collider. “It will not be [filming] this year. Ryan is a very busy, very successful actor. We’ve got a number of things we’ve already announced that we now have to make, but it’s exciting for it to have begun. Again, a very different type of character in the MCU, and Ryan is a force of nature, which is just awesome to see him bring that character to life.”

Deadpool joining the MCU does present some intriguing prospective opportunities for other Marvel properties, though. Until now, the mouthy merc has been conspicuously excluded from Marvel’s movies and TV shows (besides 2009’s X-Men Origins: Wolverine, but we don’t talk about that), despite featuring as a guest in multiple comic series including The Avengers, Daredevil, and Spider-Man. If he shows up in WandaVision, I called it.
