Tune in to the PS5 preview event this week

Sony has scheduled its next PS5 hypestream, promising 40 minutes of “feature updates on the latest titles from Worldwide Studios and our world-class development partners”, but not promising to confirm a price for the console but also not promising not to, so… it’s a maybe? Maybe.

The PlayStation 5 Showcase event goes live on YouTube and Twitch on Wednesday at 22:00 local time. According to the PlayStation Blog, it’s intended to “give you one more look at some of the great games coming to PS5 at launch (and beyond!)” but it’s hard to imagine that last week’s Xbox leaks and subsequent announcements won’t have some impact on the program agenda. With the models and prices for the Xbox Series S and Xbox Series X now out on the internet for your Xmas bonus budget consideration, it would be kind of awkward if Sony doesn’t bust out its contenders.

And since we’re speculating, I’m betting my lunch on the introduction of a subscription service like Xbox Game Pass. Previous generations of consoles were sold on exclusives, but this generation? Besides hardcore fanboys, I dunno if that’s so important anymore, and the prospect of a 100+ game library for R150 per month is a compelling one for a lot of consumers.
