No Man’s Sky developer Hello Games is working on its next “big” game and maybe we should all manage our expectations this time around.
Hello Games became the poster child for over-hyping and under-delivering when No Man’s Sky launched in 2016 with plenty of bugs, but without some key features, angering fans that had been promised the epic, open-universe, exploration game of their dreams. The anger only increased when the, usually chatty, studio went radio-silent in the face of complaints while they quietly went about fixing everything. According to Polygon’s recent interview with studio founder Sean Murray, they were naive in some aspects of promoting No Man’s Sky, but all the excitement and drama was ultimately worth it, because it got a lot of people, who “wouldn’t have known about the game otherwise”, talking about it.
Where we’ve ended up with the game, where we have hundreds of millions of hours played and a really happy community and all of that kind of thing, you know, I’m OK with that deal that we did, right?
A good number of updates later and No Man’s Sky has finally achieved what it meant to from the start; appeasing the fans. Now, the Hello Games 26-person team is split between No Man’s Sky support and a new “big” project, so we can probably expect more lofty promises in our future.
All we know about this new title, so far, is that it’s not a sequel and it will be “a huge, ambitious game like No Man’s Sky”.
