Epic Games is hosting an anti-Apple Fortnite tournament in an apparent effort to completely obliterate whatever remains of their relationship with the $2 trillion company and the parents of children with iPhones.
The #FreeFortnite Cup is asking players across platforms, around the world, to celebrate together, one last time, before the next Fortnite update, which iOS users won’t get, because Fortnite is no longer supported on Apple devices, because of Epic.
The #FreeFortnite Cup takes place on 23 August and participants will have four (region-specific) hours to compete as a Solo player in up to 12 matches. Prizes include the satirelicious Tart Tycoon Outfit and a physical #FreeFortnite hat, with the top 1,200 competitors winning one of the following bits of non-Apple hardware:
- Alienware Gaming Laptop
- Samsung Galaxy Tab S7
- OnePlus 8
- PlayStation 4 Pro
- Xbox One X
- Nintendo Switch
You can check out the official rules over here.
Epic is acting like this is all totally out of their control, but iOS players wouldn’t be missing out if Epic just rolled back the update that circumvents Apple’s contractually agreed-upon pay cut. They could then keep their lawsuit going without negatively impacting their Apple player base, but I guess drama is more lucrative.
Fortnite Chapter 2 – Season 4 launches on 27 August.
