Move your Google Play Music data or lose it

Google Play Music is shutting down in September, but you have until December 2020 to transfer anything you want to keep to YouTube Music. Then you can forget about it again, because Spotify exists.

Which is the reason why all of this is happening. Earlier this month, Google announced that they will be shutting down Google Play Music and merging it with the slightly more popular YouTube Music. This means that anything you’ve purchased on Google Play Music will disappear unless you download it to the device of your choosing or transfer it YouTube Music. Here’s how to do that:

Transfer:

  • Visit https://music.youtube.com/transfer and click Transfer OR
  • Open the YouTube Music app > tap on your profile picture > Settings > Transfer from Google Play Music > Transfer from Google Play Music

Download:

  • Head over to Google Takeout
  • Check the box next to Google Play Music and then click Next step
  • Select your choice of a delivery method, frequency, and file type
  • Click Create export

This process could take minutes or hours, depending on how invested you were in the Play Music experience.

And if someone gifted you a Google Play Music subscription for some reason? You should be getting an email from Google, informing you that they’re going to convert your gifted subscription to Google Play credits – hooray.
