Epic Games vs Apple

Epic wants to hit pause on Apple’s retaliation following contract violations

Seems Apple has gone for the nuclear option against Epic Games – threatening the termination of Unreal Engine support.

You should know by now that Epic Games is fighting the people’s fight by taking on Apple and Google’s monopolistic tendencies. Well, Apple has responded by threatening to terminate Epic’s developer accounts, and access to iOS and Mac development tools, if Epic doesn’t roll back the Fortnite update that circumvents their 30 percent pay cut for in-game purchases. According to Apple’s statement to The Verge, Epic did this to itself.

We very much want to keep the company as part of the Apple Developer Program and their apps on the Store. The problem Epic has created for itself is one that can easily be remedied if they submit an update of their app that reverts it to comply with the guidelines they agreed to and which apply to all developers. We won’t make an exception for Epic because we don’t think it’s right to put their business interests ahead of the guidelines that protect our customers.

Epic has filed for a restraining order against Apple to prevent the termination of their access to the developer program, due to go ahead on 28 August, as it would mean developers could no longer use Unreal Engine when developing or supporting apps and games on Apple platforms. Which is kind of a big deal.

Epic isn’t perfect, at all, but Apple’s response does kind of prove their point…
