Dave Franco will be rocking the mic like a vandal in an upcoming biopic about Robert Van Winkle’s unlikely rise to 90’s fame as Vanilla Ice.
So, it’s obligatory that I ask you all now to stop, collaborate, and listen, because the film, titled To the Extreme, will track Van Winkle’s journey from high school drop out, to car salesman, to creator of one of the few songs guaranteed to get a certain demographic of people back on the dance floor, miming along to all the lyrics that they definitely know; Ice, Ice, Baby (da ding ding ding didda ding ding).
Vanilla Ice achieved overnight success with the release of his debut album, To the Extreme, in 1990, selling 15 million copies world wide. After that, though? Not so much. Although, he still performs for a small group of loyal fans and appears every now and again on reality TV. Also, he dated Madonna once.
According to an interview with Insider, Franco wants the film to have the same feel as The Disaster Artist, in that it won’t be directly mocking the fallen superstar.
With that movie, people expected us to make a broad comedy where we make fun of Tommy Wiseau, but the more real we played it, the funnier and heartfelt it was — that’s the tone we want for this one as well.
Preproduction has yet to start on To the Extreme, due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
