The class action lawsuit against Riot Games, over alleged gender discrimination, has been settled and Riot is now due to pay out around $10 million to the women that have had to put up with working there for the past five years.
The settlement states that the $10 million will be shared out amongst about 1,000 people who self-identify as women and have worked for Riot from November 2014 until the date of the settlement. Individual payouts will depend on each employee’s tenure and position. Since it was determined that a significant difference in salary existed between men and women working the same, or similar, jobs at Riot, the payout is meant to make up for the unfair loss of income.
A spokesperson for Riot confirmed that this will “fully resolve the class action lawsuit”.
The settlement is another important step forward, and demonstrates our commitment to living up to our values and to making Riot an inclusive environment for the industry’s best talent.
In the wake of the allegations, Riot took a number of steps towards improving their company culture, including the creation of an internal system for reporting sexual harassment and discrimination, a review of their pay, promotion, and hiring practices, hiring a dedicated diversity officer, and removing problematic staff. However, a number of senior employees, who were named in the lawsuit for being part of the problem, still remain.
The lawsuit was filed after an exposé by Kotaku revealed the bro-culture nightmare experienced by employees at Riot Games.
