Not to be outdone by Netflix’s The Witcher, which recently announced it will be getting a second season based solely on trailer hype and Henry Cavill’s smouldering abs, Amazon has already decided that its Lord of the Rings prequel series will be getting a second season, too. So there.
The only difference being that Amazon hasn’t actually started filming their Lord of the Rings prequel series. It doesn’t even have an official name. Seems like they’re seriously banking on the draw-power of the mighty Tolkien, even though they haven’t told us what the series is about, yet. Although, it’s a pretty safe bet that the story will involve Sauron and some rings.
Apparently, pre-production is set to start, in the next few weeks, in New Zealand, where they will film the first two episodes then stop and have a five-month think before doing the rest. This is all part of the plan, so executives and producers can evaluate the footage before pressing Go on the rest of it. If this sounds horrifically slow, they probably intend to film both seasons back-to-back, which should mean less time to wait between seasons when it finally hits our screens.
The Lord of the Rings prequel series has a, rather hopeful, release year of 2021, which is also around the time we should see The Witcher making its second pass.
