We recently learned that a new Batman film was being developed, creatively titled The Batman, with Robert Pattinson pegged for the lead, which has since been confirmed. Whatever you feel about the casting, at least it’s not an origin story.
The Batman takes place in the early days of Bruce Wayne’s forays into brooding vigilantism, without us having to be reminded how his parents died, or how bats feature into his psychosis. I mean, we’ll probably get a little flashback, but it’s not what this movie’s about, according to director Matt Reeves.
This time, we will see Batman doing what he does best, despite what all the movies suggest, which is solving crimes through his superior detective skills. Batman has always been the World’s Greatest Detective, it just usually gets forgotten because stabbing things with bat-shaped paraphernalia is more “fun”. The Batman will have more of a noir feel with 30-something Bruce learning how this whole detecting thing works. So, after he dumped the balaclava in favour of the cowl, but before the Batwing, and definitely without any Batnips.
Catwoman and the Penguin are the two bad guys most often rumoured to be involved, with the kitty leaning more towards chaotic neutral than true villain.
