Sony’s next-gen PlayStation console supports 8K, ray-tracing, and backwards compatibility

That a new PlayStation console is in development hasn’t exactly been a secret until now, but what’s in the box? That’s not so much a secret anymore.

In an exclusive interview with Wired, lead system architect Mark Cerny has confirmed what gamers can expect with Sony’s next-gen PlayStation console, including a custom eight-core AMD CPU, based on its third-gen Ryzen hardware, a custom AMD Radeon Navi GPU with support for up to 8K graphics and ray-tracing, 3D audio, a built-in SSD, and an optical disc drive. The PS5 (or whatever it’s going to be) will also feature backwards compatibility with PS4 games and PSVR.

Cerny wouldn’t confirm when the console will launch, however, but it won’t be out in 2019. Maybe in 2020? Maybe.
