The ever-popular MMORPG World of Warcraft will soon be implementing new ways to pay for game time. Recently announced on Battle.net, a new item called the WoW Token will be introduced to the game. Hit the jump for news and chicken.
The way these tokens work is very simple, and has been a staple of games like Eve Online and WildStar for some time. Players purchase a WoW Token using cold hard cash (or credit card), and then are able to either redeem it for themselves or sell it through the Auction House. Once redeemed, a WoW Token gives players 30 more days of game time. Blizzard was quick to inform that once a Token is bought with gold, it is soulbound (locked) to your character and can’t be resold or accidentally deleted. Tokens will also have a dynamically changing price according to which region you play in (America, Europe, Korea, etc.) and the selling price can’t be altered by the seller.

So what does it all mean? Well, if you have a hoard of gold in your account but nothing to buy, you theoretically never need to pay for a subscription with real money again. And if you need more gold, you won’t need to resort to third-party gold sellers. Blizzard is also adamant that this is not a free-to-play model.
There’s been no announcement regarding launch date for the Tokens and how much they’ll actually cost, but a subscription shake-up like this definitely bodes well for the longevity of the game.
