Nintendo Officially Unveils The Highly-Anticipated Switch 2

After months of rumours, leaks, and enough Donkey Kong memes to fill a barrel, Nintendo has finally swung into action and revealed the successor to the Switch.

Ladies, gentlemen, soon-to-be-broke gamers, and Koopas, meet the Switch 2! Nintendo caused South Africans around the country to stop working at 3 p.m. today by dropping the news of their new console with a two-minute teaser video.

The video in question is our first glimpse at the console—and oh boy, does it not disappoint. The new design includes some intriguing upgrades, such as magnetically connected Joy-Cons—which, as any Switch owner will tell you, is a huge upgrade.

The Switch 2 is set to arrive in 2025, with more details promised at a Nintendo Direct scheduled for the 2nd of April. But for now, you can check out the announcement trailer and decide which amiibo you’ll sacrifice to the pre-order gods.

Nintendo’s announcement comes after what feels like a lifetime of speculation. Over the last couple of years, the rumours and leaks have been relentless. Prototype shells, internal components, mysterious optical sensors, and even Switch 2-branded MicroSD Express cards retail listings have all popped up online.

But through all of this, Nintendo maintained its usual poker face. The company’s only official acknowledgement? A vague promise to reveal the Switch’s successor before the end of March 2025 and confirmation that the console will be backwards compatible with Switch 1 games.

While the console has now been announced, you can bet that the speculation between now and April will be far from over. From what the teaser video revealed, Switch 2 owners can look forward to a slightly larger screen, magnetically attached Joy-Cons, and a newly designed kickstand.

Nintendo has a track record of blending the familiar with the innovative, and the Switch 2 seems poised to continue that tradition. While the original Switch was a hybrid console that transformed handheld gaming, will the Switch 2 stick to the same script or throw us a curveball worthy of Mario Baseball? One thing’s for sure: we’re ready to press start.

Now, I want to know your thoughts on the reveal. Let me know in the comments below.
