It’s been an entire decade since Hearthstone dropped us into its cosy tavern of top decks and lethal board clears, and it’s almost unbelievable that Blizzard’s famous card-battler hasn’t dabbled in crossovers beyond the Warcraft universe.
Sure, players have blasted murlocs and giggled at explosive sheep, but not one appearance from Blizzard’s other juggernauts? Not even a sneaky Zergling? But that’s finally changing: Hearthstone is inviting the big guns in January with the Heroes of StarCraft mini-set.
This intergalactic showdown is perfectly timed, dovetailing neatly with the game’s current outer space theme (yes, there are spaceships—don’t ask, just accept it). Blizzard promises fans a galaxy’s worth of classic StarCraft units in card form.
The cards will be stamped with an icon for Terran, Protoss, or Zerg, but players can go wild with class flexibility. The Zerg are bringing face-melting aggro; the Protoss specialize in mana-cheating high-cost plays, and the Terrans? They’re here to build and launch battleships straight to the board.
Heroes of StarCraft was announced during the Warcraft 30th Anniversary Direct stream. Blizzard also teased next year’s Hearthstone roadmap, the Year of the Raptor.
In true Blizzard style, the company also snuck in a casual flex: Hearthstone has hosted a whopping 160 billion games over the years. If Heroes of StarCraft succeeds, don’t be surprised if Hearthstone gets even more ambitious with future crossovers.
