By now, we’ve all surely heard about Valve’s MOBA meets arena shooter, Deadlock. If you somehow haven’t, you can check out our first impressions of the game here.
If you also somehow haven’t already heard, Valve added a South African batch of servers for Deadlock players to play on, giving us a sweet 30 ping instead of that gross European 180. However, due to the small number of players in our region at the moment, you may still get placed on a European server so you can have a fair game with players on the same MMR as you.
Then, just to add more to the list of things you probably haven’t heard about since you made it this far into the article, the matchmaking system for Deadlock was found using ChatGPT and has now been implemented into the game.
I’m gonna keep posting my ChatGPT wins, because this thing keeps blowing my mind, and I think there are some skeptics who don’t get how amazing this tool is.
A few days ago we switched Deadlock’s matchmaking hero selection to the Hungarian algorithm. I found it using ChatGPT pic.twitter.com/dyLPDPyBJ8

According to Fletcher Dunn, a veteran engineer at Valve, the Hungarian Algorithm that has now been implemented into Deadlock was discovered using the AI tool. Dunn has been using ChatGPT as a search engine where he can ask the system about something with vague detail and be presented with an answer. He admits that he could have found the same answer eventually using traditional search engines, but he would need to have the right search terms. Using ChatGPT, he can “discuss” the problem rather than hit search fifty times with various search patterns.
According to Unity’s Gaming Report for this year, over 60% of game developers are using generative AI somewhere in their development process. Although, most are probably using it slightly differently to Dunn.
