Alan Wake 2’s Lake House Expansion: Where Control Meets the Dark Place

We’ve been hearing whispers about The Lake House expansion for Alan Wake 2 for almost a year, but finally, it’s out of the shadows and into the light! This marks the second DLC for the game. While the first one, Night Springs, had players flipping channels on a fictional TV show, The Lake House promises to unravel a whole new level of spooky. Set within the Federal Bureau of Control’s research station, players can expect some reality-bending weirdness as they dive into it this October.

Creative director Sam Lake has this to say on X about the upcoming expansion:

“While I took a break in a cabin by a lake after Night Springs, Kyle Rowley, Clay Murphy, Juhani Jokinen, and Molly Maloney, with the rest of the brilliant Alan Wake team, kept on working on The Lake House. It’s shaping up to be something special. And by special, I mean terrifying.”

And from what we’ve seen so far, he’s not wrong because nothing says rest and relaxation like cryptic shadow monsters and mind-bending parallel dimensions.

According to the trailer’s description, the expansion runs alongside the main game’s events. It lets you step into the boots of FBC agent Kiran Estevez. The Lake House throws you right into the deep end of survival horror, where the FBC research station has been rocked by a catastrophic event – because what could go wrong when you mix reckless experiments with a reality-warping lake?

Now, the internet has its own theories, and they are that the expansion may take place before Estevez meets Alan Wake 2’s main heroine, Saga Anderson, and before the Bureau gets its hands on Alan.

The reason for this theory is that there is a dialogue in the base game that hints at this timeline, where Estevez casually drops:

“It’s a Bureau research facility at Cauldron Lake, set up to study the effects of this AWE. When I got into town, I went there for backup. The whole station is lost, taken by the Shadow. Lost a lot of agents, barely got out myself.”

But whether the internet is right about the timeline or not, The Lake House is sure to beef up the Alan Wake lore and stir up some serious Control vibes.

The FBC is a cornerstone of Control’s universe, and fans of Remedy’s interconnected worlds are probably excitedly frothing at the mouth. Alan Wake 2’s game director, Kyle Rowley, dropped a tantalizing hint:

“Dive into the world of Control through the lens of Alan Wake in this survival horror experience!”

So, it’s fair to say that players can expect a few Easter eggs and possibly even a hiss or two, for old times’ sake.
