Freedom Wars fans, rejoice! I mean, if your old backs, joints, and bodies will allow it. After more than a decade of being stuck in its handheld cell, Freedom Wars, a PS Vita gem, is finally busting out and making a run for console and PC – and I, for one, am super stoked about this jailbreak.
If you don’t already know what Freedom Wars is because you were born into a world where handhelds don’t suck, then allow me to explain. Imagine a sci-fi, post-apocalyptic Monster Hunter – except instead of being a seasoned badass, you’re a scrawny prisoner with a sweet one-million-year sentence.
Yup, your to-do list includes shaving time off your ridiculous prison term by taking down massive mechanical behemoths known as Abductors. But, plot twist: take a few too many steps in your cell and, bam, extra years get slapped on like they’re going out of fashion. It’s like trying to unlock the ultimate achievement, except the game keeps patching in more requirements.

The object of the game is to save the world, or at least a chunk of it, and to do this, you can go at it alone or with a co-op squad. Freedom Wars even has global leaderboards ranking cities by performance for those feeling competitive. It’s like the Olympics, but with fewer medals and more “don’t die” energy.
The remaster also includes some serious upgrades. According to the press release, the game will have 4K resolution, upgraded textures, 60fps performance on both PlayStation and PC, a totally overhauled weapon crafting system, added difficulty settings, and a bunch of other gameplay tweaks.
Another positive is that you don’t even have to wait all that long to play it. Freedom Wars Remastered will be released on Steam and PlayStation 5 on the 9th of January, 2025.
