Western Digital Launch Massive 8TB SSD for your PS5

What better upgrade accessory for your PS5 than giving it the storage capacity it needs, nay, deserves! With digital game stores these days, it’s easy to fill up your console’s drive. Look at games like the new Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3, which requires over 240GB of storage space, throw in Balder’s Gate 3 at over 100GB, Star Wars Jedi: Survivor at over 140GB, and Horizon Forbidden West at over 100GB and you can see why gamers need to upgrade their storage. Especially if you like to hop between titles like I do, and I really hate uninstalling games to free up space.

Hot on the heels of the PS5 Pro reveal last week, Western Digital today announced that it is launching an 8TB version of its popular WD_Black SN850P NVMe drives. This drive is also officially licensed for your PS5 so you know there will be no incompatibility or performance issues.

“We’re proud to expand the WD_BLACK SN850P lineup for the PlayStation5 console to meet the capacity and performance needs of today’s gamers,” said Susan Park, Vice President of Consumer Products and Strategic Partnerships at Western Digital. “With the officially licensed WD_BLACK SN850P now available in an 8TB capacity, players can now store even more and continue to play with confidence, knowing that their gaming experience will not be interrupted by latency issues,” she added.

We’re big fans of the WD_Black SN850P NVMe range and have one running in NAG’s own PlayStation 5 console, you can check out our review here.

Part of the official certification also means that this 8TB NVMe SSD, with its huge heatsink, will fit into your PS5’s M.2 slot. Gamers will also get a one-month free trial of the PlayStationPlus Deluxe service, which costs around R210 per month.

We don’t expect this drive to be cheap. On its US Amazon shop listing, you can get the 8TB WD_BLACK SN850P drive for $999, which is just under R18,000 if converted directly. Expect local pricing to be over R20,000 when it launches here.
