Openblack Lets you Play the Age Old Classic, Black and White, on Your Current Gen PC

Probably one of the most sought-after remakes or sequels in gaming history has got to be the Black and White franchise. The strategy epic that grants you the powers of a God and a ginormous creature to control.

While it’s probably never going to happen (WHY?!), a small development team has finally built an open-source engine that can run the game on the latest technology. Openblack has been in the works for five years now, and the team released their 0.1.0 release earlier this week.

The GitHub repository provides files for Windows, Linux and Macs, which means you can dive right into being all Godly on whatever machine you have sitting in front of you, even your Steam Deck. There is also some experimental support for builds on iOS and Android.

While this all sounds grand and mighty, there is a catch. To get the game to run, you will still need the original files from the Black and White disc that you’ve kept safely in your cupboard for the past 23 years.

It’s also worth noting that this is a 0.1.0 release, which means there are more than a few bugs on display and not everything will be perfect, you know, just like we used to play games back in 2001.

Luckily, there is also a fanmade patch for the game that can iron out just a few of those bugs and offer a bit more quality of life to the game.

For fans of Peter Molyneux, the original designer behind Black and White and the Fable series, you would also be excited to hear that Molyneux is working on a new “God Genre” game called Master of Albion.

The game looks to blend a few of Molyneux’s past creations, like the God Hand from Black and White and the world of Fable, but it also adds in a third-person control feature that lets you take over some of the townsfolk living in your village.

We don’t yet have a release date for the game, but it is exciting to see that there may be a Molyneux comeback hitting our gaming devices soon.

Now that we can once more, will you be diving back into Black and White? Let us know in the comments below.
