Last week, Sony introduced South Africa to its new ULT Power Sound Speakers and headphones at an event held in Sandton, Johannesburg.
The event featured incredible live performances by content creators and music artists Ghost Hlubi and Magatsela More, and the talented PD Jokes kept us laughing throughout the afternoon. Naturally, the new Sony speakers powered the audio at the event, and I have to admit it sounded really good. The common feature across all of the new Sony devices is the ULT button, which delivers more bass should you need extra oomph from your music.

Here’s a closer look at what the ULT Series has to offer:
- ULT Tower 10: Starting with the high-end speaker in this series, the ULT Tower 10 greeted us as we entered the venue. At over a meter tall and weighing in at 29kg, you know this behmoth means business. The ULT Tower 10 features 360-degree sound, so you can put this one anywhere in a room. it has RGB party lights that are vibrant and bright, and you can change the light settings to a number of modes. If you like to be the centre of the party, you can even make use of the speaker’s karaoke function or hook up your band’s EQ – just warn the neighbours ahead of time. For us gamers, you’ll be glad to hear that you can connect the ULT Tower 10 to your TV and pair multiple Bluetooth devices at the same time. It might just be awkward to carry it around with your MSI Claw portable gaming device. At least the 25-hour battery life will ensure you have a full day’s use at a single charge.

- ULT Field 7: The Sony speaker that caught my attention at the event was the ULT Field 7, a portable Bluetooth speaker that features impressive sound with plenty of bass to keep your toes tapping. Weighing in at just over 6kg and just under half a meter long, this speaker will ensure you are the centre of the party indoors or outdoors. The ULT Field 7 features an impressive 30-hour battery life and is dust and waterproof. I was equally impressed with the bass produced by this speaker, but I can’t wait for a hands-on test to see just what this speaker can do. For gaming, this could also be a great solution; connect it to your portable gaming device or your PC via Bluetooth.

- ULT Field 1: This is the ultra-portable speaker in the ULT range. The Field 1 is compact, so you can easily throw it in your bag and take it with you. it weighs just over half a kilogram and produces a clear, crisp sound with nice bass. The event was rather noisy, yet this speaker still produced good sound, although I felt it may have been a bit soft – but again, I’ll wait for some hands-on time with this speaker to confirm how loud it really gets. With a 12-hour battery life, this speaker looks like a good offering for those of us who always have a speaker close by.

- ULT Wear: Sony also introduced us to its new headphones, the ULT Wear, which, by all accounts, seem to be a real winner for headphone fans. They look great and sound pretty impressive, to boot. Even though the event was noisy, we could test out the noise-cancellation features quite successfully. The ULT Wear weighs around 225g and has a battery life of around 30 hours.
