In no world, alternate universe, or augmented timeline would I have been able to accurately predict that Monty Python, one of my dad’s all-time favourite blasts from the past, would be coming into my world thanks to the latest Magic: The Gathering crossover.
But here we are, on Earth in 2024, and it really is happening: King Arthur from Monty Python and the Holy Grail will soon cross from my dad’s collection of VCR tapes and into my collection of Magic cards. How is this real? I don’t even understand.
This frankly manic crossover comes to us thanks to Magic: The Gathering’s “Secret Lair” series. At its core, this series consists of standard cards that are reskinned as part of ongoing collaborations with artists and properties.
The Monty Python collaboration will consist of two parts: the first will have five cards, and the other will have three.
If I’m honest, as much as I’m poking fun at this collaboration and still secretly think that this must be a very ill-timed April Fool’s joke, it is pretty amazing to see how much care has gone into these cards and how much love there still is for Monty Python – even all these years later.
Now, there is finally a way for me to introduce my dad to the flying circus that is Magic the Gathering. So, thanks, I guess.
