In some genuinely exciting news, ID Software’s follow-up to the smash hit Doom Eternal was revealed during the Xbox Games Showcase. While the follow-up has been long-awaited, in a twist of fate no one could have seen coming, it looks better than expected.
The follow-up is set to be a medieval-themed prequel called Doom: The Dark Ages, and a short trailer released alongside the reveal shows a new look for Doom Guy alongside some gameplay and an expected release window of 2025.
Perhaps the coolest twist is that this time around, Doom Guy will have a shield/chainsaw combo. The shield can be thrown and bounced between enemies like a Captain America-esque wet dream.
The trailer also showed off vehicle combat, but to up the level, it’s not a plane, car, or bike, but whole-ass dragon players will be able to pilot. Doom: The Dark Ages is a great way to tie the franchise’s lore together.
In a nutshell, after all the events of the Doom games from the 90s, Doom Guy went to hell, where he did his traditional Doom things, killing demons and even joining a society of mythic heroes called the Night Sentinels.
However, that went to hell if you’ll excuse the pun, and Doom Guy ended up locked in a coffin before getting unleashed on Mars, in a completely different timeline, before going into a retelling of his first adventure in Doom 2016.
But lore aside, all that matters is that Doom: The Dark Ages looks to be another grand entry into the franchise, and we hear at NAG can’t wait to see where it goes from here.
